About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga
This is a full-time permanent position based in Wellington.
Our Senior Privacy Advisor reports to the Manager, Privacy and plays a key role in supporting the Ministry to manage personal information well.
Situated in the wider Legal and Privacy team, the Privacy team develops and delivers a programme of work to lift the Ministry’s privacy compliance, capability and culture.
This is a varied role where no two days are quite the same. You’ll give practical privacy advice across a wide range of work, including projects, incidents and breaches, requests for personal information, new technologies, and policy and operational initiatives. You’ll also play an active role in helping mature the Ministry’s privacy function, contributing to the development of team processes, operational guidance, and forward work planning.
Salary range: $100,296 - $121,490 per annum + kiwi saver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

We’re looking for someone who combines sound judgement with a practical, solutions-focused approach. You’ll be comfortable working through complex or ambiguous issues, breaking problems down, and helping others understand risks, options, and next steps in a calm and pragmatic way.
You build strong working relationships easily and communicate clearly with people from a wide range of backgrounds. You know how to tailor your advice to your audience and can balance legal or technical considerations with operational realities.
You’ll enjoy working collaboratively as part of a small, supportive team, and be motivated by helping build a positive privacy culture that enables good outcomes.
You will also have:
- Experience giving advice in privacy, legal, risk, public sector, regulatory, or related environments.
- A sound knowledge of the Privacy Act and an ability to apply legislation in practical, real-world situations.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, including the ability to work methodically through unfamiliar or complex issues.
- Experience building effective working relationships and influencing good practice.
- The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
To be successful in the role, you’ll be someone who’s motivated by building a positive, pragmatic privacy culture that enables good outcomes. The Privacy team is a constructive and collaborative working environment. Advisors have a high level of trust and autonomy, backed up by supportive leadership.
