This is an opportunity to work across the data and reporting lifecycle, supporting a well-established and high performing research and analysis team. The Tertiary System Performance Analysis team in the Tertiary and Evidence Group is looking for a Senior Data Analyst to join on a permanent basis.
This role would suit someone who has experience with building and maintaining large or complex data sets and is seeking to broaden their skills. The role offers the opportunity to work on the end-to-end process from collation of source data through to publication of national statistics.
You will support the Ministry’s stewardship of tertiary education data and play a key role in supporting the team to deliver on the research, analysis and information priorities for tertiary education. You will be responsible for maintaining strong relationships with the Tertiary Education Commission, Stats NZ and other agencies on the supply and exchange of data. You will be part of the team with a culture of learning and improvement and be actively looking for opportunities for development and innovation.
Salary range: $100,296 - $121,490 per annum + KiwiSaver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Data Analyst with a strong track record in data management who will be able to hit the ground running and bring passion, energy and analytical ability. We’re keen to hear from you if you have:
- Experience collating, maintaining, analysing and interpreting statistical data held in large and complex datasets
- Knowledge and experience of using SAS, Power BI and Excel
- Demonstrated problem solving, numeracy and analytical skills and experience
- Excellent data presentation skills, including reports and visualisations
- Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to a non-technical or general audience
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- A commitment to supporting a culture of learning and improvement
- Intellectual curiosity, with a drive to improve processes
- Knowledge and experience in the tertiary education sector would be an advantage
- The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
About our group and team | Mātau rōpū ake
The Tertiary System Performance Analysis team supports tertiary education policy with relevant, quality and timely evidence and data on the tertiary education system. The work programme includes analytical support for policy work, more in-depth analytical research pieces, regular statistical reporting and monitoring of sector performance, and forecasts and models to inform budgets and costings. It spans all aspects of the tertiary education system including access, achievement, investment, quality, and post-study outcomes, often focusing on key population and learner groups.
The Tertiary and Evidence group leads interesting and challenging work programmes aimed at strengthening tertiary education at a systems level to ensure that it is inclusive, responsive, and delivers equitable outcomes for all learner groups. The Ministry’s role in tertiary education policy offers exciting challenges for policy professionals, including advising on the design of a new tertiary education strategy and how to give effect to Ministerial priorities across tertiary education portfolios. Our work sits across social and economic policy, and we work closely with other government agencies including the Tertiary Education Commission, the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Education New Zealand, and others.
