Mō te tīma - About our team

Founded in 1990, Te Tumu has a vision to be a world-leading teaching and research centre of Māori, Pacific and Indigenous knowledge. Since then, it has rapidly gained an international reputation as one of the preferred places in Aotearoa New Zealand to learn about Māori, Pacific and Indigenous cultures and societies. We also teach te reo Māori (Māori language). Our multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary staff, students, research and teaching is reflected in our name Te Tumu, a pan-Polynesian term which is often used in Māori in the phrase te tumu herenga waka - a post for tying up canoes. We liken ourselves to a foundation, one to which staff, students and guests can anchor themselves to for the duration of their stay at the University of Otago - Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka.

Te Tumu offers undergraduate and postgraduate study to PhD level in three programmes - Māori Studies, Pacific Studies, and Indigenous Studies, as well as the Master of Indigenous Studies, tailored especially for distance students. Our staff have established reputations in their areas of expertise and the programme as a whole has an energetic research culture.

Te mahi - The role

Applications are invited for a Lecturer position in Te Tumu, School of Māori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies. The position offers an academic career in a well-established and progressive School with a proud teaching and research record. This is a full-time, permanent position.

The successful candidate will be expected to take on a full teaching load that includes teaching Māori language classes and any other paper/s focused on subjects related to their research expertise. The successful candidate may be expected to teach into other Te Tumu papers.

The candidate will also develop and maintain a programme of research and publication. In addition, the candidate will also be expected to contribute to the administration of the School and undertake service work with the School, the University and its broader communities.

Te Tumu has a strong postgraduate research culture and the successful candidate would therefore be expected to undertake the supervision of postgraduate students.

Kā pūkeka me kā wheako - Your skills and experience

The successful candidate will be expected to have:

a PhD (or close to completion) in Māori Studies or a relevant field
a strong proficiency in te reo Māori
applied experience of tikanga Māori
teaching experience of te reo Māori from beginners to advanced levels (preferably at tertiary level)
a research portfolio that includes peer reviewed publications and evidence of successful supervision of research students
evidence of an ability to work with students and staff from differing academic and cultural backgrounds and at all levels of the institution
excellent oral and written communication skills
a strong commitment to developing collaborative working relationships with colleagues
commitment to upholding values, tikanga, kawa and traditions as guided by Ngāi Tahu, as mana whenua in the region and broad knowledge of the cultural traditions of other iwi/hapū.

Please note experience in teaching te reo Māori, Māori society and Māori Performing Arts would be an advantage. We also encourage applications from researchers whose work considers the indigenous dimensions of environmental, social, cultural and wellbeing realities.

This is a permanent, full-time (1 FTE) position based in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.

The appointment range is $94,084 to $111,056 per annum.
