About the role | Mō te tūranga

The Cancer Society Wellington Division, Greater Wellington Centre is looking to hire a Senior Cancer Prevention Advisor to join our team on a part-time basis (18.75 hours per week, or 0.5FTE) to make a difference in the lives of people with cancer.

This role will be based in Newtown.

Your main focus will be to identify health promotion and cancer prevention topics on the biggest preventable risk factors for cancer (tobacco, diet and weight, alcohol, and UV radiation) to our local communities using evidence-based, population-level cancer prevention strategies proven to reduce cancer disparities as part of Cancer Society’s National Cancer Prevention Strategic Plan.

Key Responsibilities:

Implement the Cancer Prevention Strategic Plan at local community level
Ability to translate broader cancer prevention and health strategies into programs that will fit into the local community
Leverage community network to engage and implement cancer prevention programs
Manage and mentor Cancer Prevention Volunteers
Work actively to reduce health inequalities for Māori, Pasifika, and other vulnerable groups experiencing cancer

About you | Mōu ake

To be successful in this role you will have: -

A tertiary qualification in health, education, policy or leadership, or an equivalent level of practical experience in community engagement activity.
Significant experience within public health, or the NGO sector, or the community sector, including maintaining relationships with local communities and local government.
Strong cancer prevention content knowledge developed from engagement and training in a wide range of settings, populations and health domains.
Ability to lead in the innovation, management and completion of high calibre community-oriented projects, including in partnership with Māori and other stakeholders.
Demonstrable commitment to advancing Hauora Māori, consideration for Pasifika communities, reducing health inequities and supporting Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
Demonstrable knowledge of te ao Māori, tikanga and Te Reo Māori.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a small team
Ability to contribute to wide range of professional outputs including submissions, workshops, focus groups, presentations, policy perspectives and community consultations.
The ability to develop strong working relationships both within and outside the Cancer Society
